The Arena of Verona

When, about 2000 years ago, an amphitheatre was also built in Verona to satisfy the Roman people eager for ludus, it was clear that something magnificent was being built, but no one could ever have imagined that this monument, originally used for gymnastic competitions, for spectacular sacrificial ceremonies, for hunting, wrestling and fighting games including beasts, would have survived along the centuries and would have always kept its outstanding status within the public and the cultural life of the city.

During the first decade of the 1900s, the audience of the Arena was showing a lot of sympathy and affection to the circus people, those of the "salti in rena", but, for the amphitheatre, the year 1913 meant a remarkable improvement with the performance of Aida to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Giuseppe Verdi's birth.
This event was the beginning a long series of opera seasons which, still today, are considered an outstanding event for operatic music lovers.
Over the years, the Arena has become one of the most important opera theatres in the world and, the way the Arena is now being used -with no doubt the most noble, in tune with today's sensibility- has allowed to both fulfil the needs to keep this special atmosphere for popular performances and, at the same time, to protect the integrity of this monument.
